Who is Gareth Wilding-Forbes?

Gareth as Jonathan Hayes-WalkerGareth Wilding-Forbes, author of Essence of Time and (as Jonathan Hayes-Walker – pictured here at a very early age), The Nature of Love, was born into a theatrical family – his mother and father were well known actors in London in both theatre and film.

At an early age Gareth decided that he wanted to follow in their footsteps. Although his first performance was in a radio play for the BBC at the age of ten, he had been writing and performing short plays at school, charging the other kids a penny each to watch. The school took a dim view of this and he had to stop!

In his early teens, Gareth migrated to Australia with his mother and later was awarded an entry scholarship to the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Australia.

Gareth appeared in most of the popular television series shown in Australia in the nineteen sixties before moving to England with his actress wife, Patricia McGrath. They planned to stay for two years but this extended to ten during which time they both toured extensively in major musicals, before appearing in a number of West End productions. Gareth also directed a variety of productions including a season at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre. He also worked as a periodic presenter for the BBC Pebble Mill at One program and Arts Reviewer with London Broadcasting (LBC).Gareth in Costume

On returning to Australia in the late seventies, Gareth joined the Elizabethan Theatre Trust as the first Administrative Director of the Australian Theatre of the Deaf. It was during this time that Gareth co-hosted Good Morning Sydney with Maureen Duval and presented Australia Today for the ABC over two years. He followed this with a seven year contract with the Melbourne Theatre Company raising over a million dollars through sponsorship. During this time he continued to work in television and follow his love of presenting voiceovers and featuring in 100% commercials*.A 100% commercial is one where the actor appears onscreen and also records the voiceover for the commercial.

Gareth as a young manOver the years Gareth has appeared in popular UK and Australian television shows such as Coronation Street (UK), Z Cars (UK), Within these Walls (UK), Doctor at Large (UK), Cop Shop (Aus), Neighbours (Aus), Halifax FP (Aus) and Good Morning Sydney (Aus), as well as being a regular presenter and contributor with radio stations 3AW, 3UZ, 3AK and 2WL. During his extensive career Gareth has also had the pleasure of working with Beryl Grey, Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Josè Ferrer, John Gielgud, Paul Eddington, Alan Bennet, John Sumner, Harry M Miller and Maureen Duval.

He has a degree in Education and Training from the University of Melbourne and built up an enviable career over a ten year period as a motivational lecturer using much of his artistic talent along with his unusual sense of humour.

Gareth moved to the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, New South Wales, at the end of 2010 to live near his daughters. He now presents a prime time radio program for Radio Blue Mountains 89.1 and has settled down to follow his love of writing.

In 2013 he published Essence of Time, followed shortly thereafter by The Nature of Love, and recently visited Ireland and England researching material for the sequel to Essence Of Time.
